Three reasons why you should be growing your own food..

1. Homegrown food tastes better. Because it is grown right in front of you, the food is fresher and more flavorful. It was picked within the past few hours, unlike produce that is trucked in from far away.

2. Homegrown food is better for you. Produce loses nutrients quickly. Food that is consumed soon after harvest is actually more nutritious than food that was harvested long ago and has traveled a greater distance.

3. Homegrown food is better for the environment. Cover crops prevent erosion, return nutrients to soil, and separates carbon emissions from the air. Homegrown produce travels much shorter distances, reducing the amount of carbon emitted by vehicles.

Gardening elevates your life.

There are studies that prove that gardeners are happier, healthier people. We live in a society where instant gratification is destroying our attention spans, our perseverance through obstacles in life, and our ability to be present and find joy in the beautiful miracles that nature offers us everyday. Gardening exposes you to those wonders, giving you the opportunity to engage in activities that connect you to the earth and help your mind and body function better.

Welcome to Introduction to Vegetable Gardening

This program is designed to equip you with the knowledge you need to make confident decisions in the garden.

Using the same techniques that I use in my own vegetable garden, you will be able to apply these methods and reap the benefits of harvesting your own fresh, homegrown produce.

NICE TO MEET YOU

I'm Jared Velasquez

I'm a husband, father, a former Division 1 football player turned football coach, a farm production manager, and a gardener. I've always loved plants even from a young age, but I didn't actively pursue a career in plants until after college. I spent a couple years working towards my dream of playing football professionally, but eventually I had to hang up my cleats. After that I started from the bottom at a local garden nursery doing everything from loading Christmas trees to customer service. I took courses to broaden my knowledge of plants, experimented with growing food at home, and coached football on the side. Today I manage a 100 acre farm, and I grow food year round for my family. Everything I've learned is through trial and error in my own garden, and I've made every mistake in the book. Even though I work a 9-5, I do everything I can to maximize my time with my family while maintaining a bountiful garden so I can feed my family year round.

Most people believe you need acres of land to start a garden, or that you need to quit your 9-5 and become a full time farmer if you want to gather a harvest abundant enough to feed a family of 4. This program is designed to debunk those myths and help you achieve the success you've been looking for.

I wish someone had been there to help me when I first started my gardening journey, but now I'm here to coach you through the process of learning this invaluable life skill. From seed sowing to harvesting, I will simplify everything and give you the confidence you need to take action in your garden.

"In recent years I was killing every plant and flower I got. When we moved into our first home and actually had outdoor plants to take care of I was worried, and with good reason. I had multiple things growing in the same spot and conflicting with one another, so nothing was flourishing. Thankfully Jared was not only super patient with me, but his knowledge of plants/farming/gardening has saved the plants that were already here, plus given me the actual confidence to begin planning a functional garden!"

- Esther Perez-Quesada

"Jared was helpful in turning our rooftop area into an oasis. Based on the look and feel we were looking for, he took time to design a collection of plants that hit the mark, along with a customized care plan. Jared is professional, patient, and gifted in combining his plant expertise with aesthetic design."

- Rachel Thomas

"We moved to Virginia last summer and our property needed a LOT of different trees planted around the perimeter. Being brand new to this kind of thing, we had absolutely no idea what to do or how to start. Jared walked me through EVERY part, of EVERY step, from start to finish. He easily answered any and every one of my 5,000 questions, and proved to be a truly invaluable asset, connection, and friend. With Jared's guidance and help, I have since planted 122 different trees on our property, all of which are flourishing beautifully. From perimeter privacy screening to fruit trees, to wildflowers to vegetable gardens, Jared's help has been our unfailing key to success."

The Future is Now!

If the health of our planet is declining, it means that our health is deteriorating as well. We can all play a part in protecting the systems that nature has already perfected. Growing food the way nature intended pours essential nutrients back into the soil, and in turn gives us health and vitality. With the increasing threats of inflated food costs and shortages on the rise, learning how to grow your own food is a worthy goal and a valuable life skill to possess.
